About Kalutara

Kalutara was once administered by Portuguese, followed by Dutch and then British. In the 16th century Portuguese built a fort on the site of a Buddhist Temple where a branch of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree existed. Kalutara was used as the center for spice trade by Portuguese until the Dutch took over the spice shipping port and built canals for transportation of goods. When the Dutch deserted the spice port at Kalutara, the British replaced the spice plantations with rubber and continued to use the port. Evidence of the old spice route can be seen even now.

Kalutara is the first large beautiful coastal resort town 40 km south of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Kalutara is now frequented by travelers for its beautiful beach resort with a long stretch of fine golden sandy beach and also for its authentic Sri Lankan culture. Kalutara is the meeting point of the ocean and Kalu Ganga (River) which originates from Sri Padaya (Adams Peak). The river divides Kaluthara into two administrative sections known as Kalutara North (Mahawaskaduwa) and Kalutara South (Katukurunda).

Today Kalutara especially Kalutara North is famous among tourists for tranquil attractive and scenic beach, coconut palm gardens, top-of-the-range delicious fresh seafood, fresh fruits (eg. mangosteen, mango, pineapple, banana), net fishing, fine basket ware, other cottage industries and also for other historic and religious places.

One of the main attractions of Kalutara is Gangatilake temple, world’s only Stupa where the structure inside is hollow. The main shell like structure contains a smaller dagaba inside. Interior of the great Stupa is beautifully decorated with the paintings of the life of Lord Buddha and stories about the previous births of Lord Buddha.

Richmond Castle is another place of interest one must visit. It is a European style an elegant plantation mansion that was built in 1896, in a 42 acre fruit garden.

Famous Kande Viharaya temple, a stunning piece of architecture in Aluthgama (about 20 km South of Kalutara), is a place to experience peace of mind and get the exposure to Buddhist culture. The temple is named Kande Viharaya because of its hill top location. Amazing 71 murals in the image house reflect some of the stories related to the life of Lord Buddha. This sacred place was founded in about 1734. Another prominent temple in the area is Rankoth Viharaya located in Panadura about 15 km west of Kalutara. This temple has been built on the top of a natural rock and it is named Rankoth Viharaya because of the temple’s golden pinnacle. It too has a lot of murals and paintings relating to some of the historical details of Lord Buddha's life.

Calido beach

This un-crowded beach attracts tourists due to its natural beauty and scenic views. It is a narrow strip of preserved land which runs between the Kalu River and the Indian Ocean.
